April 19, 2006 - Lovin it!

Elle's Green Issue Vanity Fair's Green IssueI am SO loving that both Elle and Vanity Fair came out with green issues recently. AND - Elle is even printed on recycled content paper!!! Haven't made it all the way through both mags yet, but so far they are both blowing me away. Love that Elle was guest edited by Laurie David as well, she's one of my big eco-heroes. Both mags have some really great robust content, as well as some good glitz and glam to entice a whole new crowd of people into these topics. Environistas Unite! **update** -- Check out the coverage of the Vanity Fair green issue party over at Eco-Chick -- complete with pictures of what looks like a fab event!

April 20, 2006 - Healthy Healthcare

CleanMed Just attended the CleanMed conference here in Seattle in association with my position at the UW Medical Center. It is astounding how much sustainability is going on in the healthcare industry, from food and green building initiatives to waste reduction and organic cotton uniforms. One of my favorite people of all time is Yolanda Sinde of the Community Coalition for Environmental Justice. One of CCEJ's first projects (and huge successes) was putting a stop to medical waste incineration taking place near the central district here in Seattle. Medical waste incineration is known to produce dioxins and other carcinogens and they are often placed in low-income areas. Was also PSYCHED to see that PVC is being phased out throughout the industry. The social and environmental impact of PVC is still being debated but it is well known that when burned, it creates dioxins. Companies like Nike and Timberland have long been phasing out PVC, glad to see healtcare has finally joined in. Glad to see the healthcare industry is now seeing the light and I'm very excited to be involved with efforts at UW Medical Center.

April 21, 2006 - Fast Greens

Yep, blown away by another magazine. The most recent issue of Fast Company Magazine is chock full of sustainability. A couple items in "Feedback" regarding their March issue to begin with. In their "Fast Talk" section, one of the highlighted individuals is Patty Herrera, Director of Multicultural Initiatives for the Oakland Raiders. The team has had many diversity firsts, including the first Hispanic head coach and then later, Art Shell, the first African American head coach. What really got me was that they now broadcast the games in Navajo. AWESOME! Next there is of course Ford's hybrid add with Kermit the Frog. Move onto an article title "Deconstructing Wal-Mart's Wonder Truck" which evaluated their fleet's efforts to improve envrironmental performance. Followed by a short blurb on Lord Richard Rogers efforts to enrich the Queens waterfront in NYC which will include some environmentally efficient materials. Next a feature article by Charles Fishman titled "A Farming Fairy Tale" which exlpores what life on the farm would be like (actually what life would be like for all of us) if a switch to organic happened overnight. Also a great book review of "Organic, Inc.". And last but not least, a great back and forth in their column "Open Debate" on feeding the world with Billy Shore of Share Our Strength and William Easterly NYU Professor.

April 26, 2006 - Greencar.com

Greencar MagazineJust ran across Greencar Magazine at the bookstore recently. Really impressed with how advanced the design of hybrids and other alternative fuel vehicles has come...even surprised me. Worth tracking down at your favorite book/magazine store.

May 2, 2006 - Courageous George

Courageous GeorgeThat's my boy. George Clooney has done it again...he stepped up and out to make a statement on an issue he is passionate about. At SSF, we're all about using the power of pop culture to make the world a better place and there are few things more effective than having a celebrity speak out to bring attention to an issue. In this case, George teamed up with Million Voices for Darfur in DC regarding the genecide situation in Darfur. You go George!

May 2, 2006 - Brad's designs on New Orleans

Yes, I know this is old news but I just have to bring it up again. The good peeps at Global Green have partnered up with Brad Pitt to bring a little attention and creativity to the future of New Orleans. Per Global Green's webssite: "the Sustainable Design Competition for New Orleans is a design challenge that combines Global Green USA's commitment to green affordable housing, sustainable cities, and climate solutions that work for communities, with Brad Pitt's passion for intelligent architecture and determination to combat inequity". Um...NICE! Looking forward to seeing the entries.

May 2, 2006 - SEEDs of sustainability

OK, I promise this will be the last blog entry on a magazine...well close to the last anyway. I am COMPLETELY addicted to SEED Magazine. And with a motto like "Science is Culture" it is easy to see why this conservation biologist/design junky environisto is hooked. This particular issue is chock full of juicy sustainable headlines, from the "tear-outable" hybrid cheetsheet to an article on climate change, a huge fold out - "2006 State of the Planet", a great feature on the outlook for Costa Rican rainforests, an out of this world photo editorial on seven amazing places that will be affected by climate change (e.g. Borneo, Venice, Vermont, etc.), and finally a great back and forth between the reigning eco-queen Laurie David and Stephen Schneider, professor and co-director fo the Center for Environmental Science and Policy at Stanford. Yeah, diggin SEED.

May 7, 2006 - Green Wave Awards

I already think Surfur's Path is one of the coolest mags out there (they were one of our 2005 OSSA Award nominees after all). Just ran across Issue 53 which, as usual, has all sorts of great articles on what's up in the surf world regarding sustainability. Diggin Surfers Against Sewage and of course SurfAid. One thing that caught me this time was Grean Wave Awards. Not only does Surfer's Path print on 100% post-consumer paper with non-GMO soy-based inks, they have the Green Wave Awards. SO Cool! Time for me to take up surfing.

June 18, 2006 - Current TV

I've said it before and I'll say it many times more I'm sure. Current TV is the coolest thing on television these days. I get addicted everytime I turn it on. I could spend the whole weekend watching pods on everyhing under the sun. Just watched pods on journalism in Iraq, pop-culture christians in Philidelphia and Hotel Chelsea. Best part is the pods are produced by pretty much anyone and everyone, folks from all walks of life.

June 18, 2006 - BGI Graduation

I just attended the Baingridge Graduate Institute's graduation ceremeny last weekend on the invitation of one of my favorite people in the world, Barbara Lawrence, a BGI graduate and member of the Suquamish Tribe. I pretty much was in happy tears throughout the whole event. BGI offers an MBA focused on sustainability that is out of this world amazing! I know the founders, Gifford and Libba Pinchot, and a several of the faculty, including Lorinda Rowledge and Jill Bamburg, through several sustainability circles in Seattle. Graduation was hard/emotional enough for me going to the UW where throusands graduated at the same time. At BGI, with a class of 30 or so, I can't even imagine how hard it must be to leave the institute, your fellow students and faculty. Folks just get to be such good friends. My friend Barbara was asked to give the invocation and I must say she did an outstanding job for her first time. She chose to take the opportunity to show gratitude to the many people, ideas and inspirations that brought BGI into existence. I was teary and inspired through the whole thing and was very surprised and honored to accept a gift on behalf of all the messengers in the sustainability movement. An amazing event with some of the most inspiring people around. If you are at all considering an MBA and have a sustainable twitch, check out BGI.

June 19, 2006 - Viva España

Whoa! Just ran across this amazing fashion show put on in Madrid called Moda Sin Toxicos. Actualy, saw a quick report on our local news in Seattle. Basically, a group of top Spanish designers got together to raise awareness about the toxic chemicals used in the fashion industry. The 16 designers who participated in the show were: gatha Ruiz de la Prada, Anke Schlder, Antonio Pernas, Carlos Dez, Carmen March, David Delfn, Hannibal Laguna, Ion Fiz, Jocomomola, Josep Abril, Juana Martn, Juanjo Oliva, La casita de Wendy, Locking Shocking, Luxoir and Txell Miras. Chemicals which the designers took steps to avoid using include the most hazardous substances commonly used in the textile sector: lead, nickel, chromium IV, aryl amines, phthalates and formaldehyde. I know that many companies like Nike and Timberline have been phasing many of these chemicals out for some time. Good to see the high fashion crowd taking notice too.
