Sunday, October 3, 2004 - Sustainability in Sante Fe

Just attended a really great youth symposium in Santa Fe organized by Earthcare International. As always, I'm blown away by the energy and creativity of youth these days and I have to say it totally recharged my batteries. Finally got to hear Ocean Robbins of YES! and Jamie Cloud of Sustainability Education Center speak too. Richard Deertrack of the Taos Pueblo gave an absolutely amazine keynote too. Best of all, they had a DJ for the whole event. Nice!

Sunday, October 5, 2004 - Earth on Film

Got to meet Caroline Cumming of the Hazel Wolf Environmental Film Festival. Don't know if it's a good thing but now we have lots of new projects...as usual in the nonprofit world though, we're both already too busy and don't have any money for our absolutely out-of-this-world ideas. We'll keep 'em on the radar though.

Friday, October 8, 2004 - The Environment with Andre

It has been a crazy week at the office with our annual campaign and memebership drive going and all. So I'm SO psyched I could fit in a short roadtrip to hear Andre Heinz speak on the environment at a town hall meeting up in Bellingham (one of my favorite cities up here in the NW) on Thursday. The jist of the meeting was, no surprise, the fact that Kerry has a pretty stellar record on the environment while Bush...well doesn't by a longshot.

I've been told for a couple years now by lots of folks to contact him since he has a degree in environmental studies from Yale (one of the grad schools I'm considering) and is working with The Natural Step to help companies go sustainable. Turns out Andre knows Jesse Johnson at Q Collection too. Crazy small world. Andre's really a great guy, very eloquent and able to engage people on a very personal level. We need to clone him right away. Ranks right up there with my heroes Vicki Robin, Paul Hawkin and Jane Goodall in my book. Andre's mother, Theresa Heinz Kerry, is a very outspoken environmentalist so kind of like the Suzukis, I guess 'green' genes do run in the family. Andre also attended the Friday debates here in Seattle so got another chance to hear Andre speak in broader terms on the election too. I'm all revved up now!

Monday, October 11, 2004 - Ashley Judd, an American Beauty Inside and Out

Saw on the Today Show that Ashley Judd has signed on to Nutrition Aid, a youth health campaign sponsored by the new American Beauty Cosmetics (an Estee Lauder company), YouthAIDS, and Population Services International. Pretty exciting stuff.

Other celeb connections I've run across recently include Paul McCartney's involvement with Adopt-a-Minefield campaign, Alyssa Milano as the 2004 Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Ambassador and Ted Dansen who continues to support efforts to protect the worlds oceans through Oceana. Ted also put in a great plug for Ermenegildo Zegna at the recent Emmy Awards.

Thursday, November 5, 2004 - Fashion and Fabric in Portland

Rebecca (SSF Co-founder) and I just finished presenting at the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) conference in Portland. We had a great turnout for our session and the group was really engaged. A lot of academic folks so I think we wowed them by demonstrating the amount and breadth of efforts underway across style/design industries and in particular in the fashion industry, from Armani using hemp to Ermenegildo Zegna using bamboo. Afterwards we made a quick trip to check out Aysia Wright's new boutique The Green Loop just outside of Portland. VERY cool stuff.

Thursday, November 12, 2004 - The BSR Bash

Just finishing up our second year helping out Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) with their annual conference, styling and producing their registration area and gala reception. It was another great year of demonstrating the amount and breadth of sustainabilty efforts underway. And, it's always great to hear about what companies are doing in the corporate social responibility arena. Got to hang with some of our NY friends which is always great too. Just before I left for Seattle got to have a quick meeting with Sara Cross from Cool not Cruel, model and entomologist Summer Rayne Oakes, Josh Dorfman of Vivavi and Mark Spellun of Plenty Magazine...such awesome, inspiring people. Can't wait to get out there and make some change myself.

Thursday, November 17, 2004 - An Excellent EMAs

Had a great time at the Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards last night here in LA. Lots of celebs, great nominees, Willie Nelson received the music award and Daryl Hanah the ongoing achievement award. Afterwards got a chance to speak to Wendy Malick and Darly Hannah a bit. Julia Butterfly Hill, one of my heroes, was also in the house so it was great catching up with her.
